How can people have thousands of friends on Facebook?

I have no idea how this is possible? (especially for the young people, since they have less time being alive and therefore less time to meet people)

Do they just add anyone whom they share a friend with? Or do people generally just add someone who are acquainted with?

Or do they just add people randomly even though they're being superficial as far as intimacy is concerned? (To consider a person a "friend")

I don't know, that's why I'm asking!..
