Never really learned how to use social media as well as I could and its holding me back. Please Help

I'm a 19 M in college. I was a late adopter of social media in HS and never utilized it like I saw my friends doing. They would be snap chatting tons of girls having lots of streaks. Meanwhile in only snaped people sporadically if I had something funny to say to that specific person. However, I feel like I am not using social media/text to my full advantage. The problem is that when I text people other than my close friends I feel like I need a good reason to do so and that I am somehow bothering them. Can someone give me a rundown on what it looks like to use snap chat well? How many people/how often do you snap/text. What do you send? What are the appropriate conduct /rules of social media?
