Facebook messenger not loading history anymore due to de-activated account?

Has anyone run into messenger.com not loading the history of their conversations? It only started happening recently. As a test I re-activated my facebook account which instantly solved the issue. I think re-deactivated and the issue came back. Was there some change that specifically is hindering messenger use without an activated account?
